What We Stand For

The ASEAN SDGs Frontrunner Cities Programme (SDGs-FC) is a new initiative under the ASEAN Working Group on Environmentally Sustainable Cities (AWGESC) funded by the Japan-ASEAN Integration Fund (JAIF). It aims to support ASEAN cities to achieve inclusive, sustainable, resilient and dynamic development in line with ASEAN Vision 2020. The programme strategically builds on the ASEAN ESC Model Cities programme (2011 – 2017), which had supported and recognised 40 frontrunner cities in their innovative practices/policies in bottom-up environmental management.

In support of the global 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the SDGs-FC programme has raised the capacity and profile of 24 ASEAN cities, (comprising ‘SDGs Frontrunner Candidate Cities’ and ‘Model Cities’) to develop and scale up multi-dimensional benefit model practices/policies towards clean and green sustainable development. It will also actively catalyse the agenda of SDGs localisation to contribute towards the national voluntary reporting and implementation of the SDGs in ASEAN Member States.

The Japan-ASEAN Integration Fund (JAIF) was officially established in March 2006, based on the pledge from then Japanese Prime Minister H.E. Mr. Junichiro Koizumi at the Ninth ASEAN-Japan Summit held in December 2005 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

JAIF aims at supporting integration efforts to create the ASEAN Community by facilitating the implementation of the ASEAN 2025: Forging Ahead Together, which consists of the blueprints for the ASEAN Political Security Community
(APSC), ASEAN Economic Community (AEC), and ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community (ASCC), as well as the Initiative for ASEAN Integration (IAI) Work Plan III and the Master Plan on ASEAN Connectivity (MPAC) 2025. JAIF also aims at promoting greater cooperation between ASEAN and Japan. Since its first financial contribution, several additional funding supports have been pledged to the original JAIF, and as of 31 May 2018, the total contribution amounts to more than USD 660,000,000. JAIF has contributed not only to advancing ASEAN integration but also to strengthening ASEAN-Japan relations by implementing various projects in the areas of disaster management, counterterrorism, maritime cooperation, economic integration, small and medium-sized enterprises development, youth exchanges, Japanese language training, and others.
